Wordle Solver

Enter what you know from today's guesses and see every word that still fits.

Placed letters (green — right letter, right spot)
Only for a letter Wordle showed green in that exact box. Just know a letter's in the word somewhere? Add it to Valid letters below instead.
Valid letters (yellow — in the word, wrong spot)
Bad letters (gray — not in the word)

How the Wordle solver works

Type each letter Wordle has already told you about into the matching box: green tiles go into the five Placed Letters boxes in their exact position, yellow tiles (right letter, wrong spot) go into Valid Letters, and gray tiles (not in the word) go into Bad Letters. The solver checks every entry against a list of more than 4,600 common five-letter English words and keeps only the ones consistent with everything you've entered, updating live as you type.

Results are ranked by how common and varied their letters are, using approximate English letter frequency — words built from common, distinct letters tend to rule out (or lock in) more of the remaining possibilities with your next guess, which is the core idea behind most Wordle strategy guides. The first row of results is highlighted as your strongest next guesses; the full matching list follows below it.

One limitation worth knowing: because the yellow-letter box doesn't track which position a letter was yellow in, the solver can't rule out a candidate word that happens to place a yellow letter back in the same spot it was yellow. In practice this rarely produces a wrong-looking suggestion, but it means the solver is a strong shortlist rather than a perfect elimination — the same trade-off most simple Wordle helpers make in exchange for a much simpler three-box input.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Wordle solver work?

Fill in the three boxes to match your guess results: Placed Letters for green tiles (the letter and its exact position), Valid Letters for yellow tiles (letters that are in the word but in a different spot), and Bad Letters for gray tiles (letters not in the word at all). The solver filters a list of over 4,600 five-letter words down to every one that fits, ranked with the most useful next guesses first.

What do Placed, Valid and Bad letters mean?

They match Wordle's own tile colors: Placed = green (right letter, right spot), Valid = yellow (right letter, wrong spot), Bad = gray (letter isn't in the answer). Type each letter into the matching box based on what your last guess showed.

Does this use the official Wordle answer list?

No — it checks against MultiSwitch's general 5-letter English word list rather than Wordle's specific curated answer list, so it can occasionally suggest a valid English word that Wordle wouldn't use as a daily answer. It's built to work for any 5-letter word puzzle, not just the official New York Times Wordle.

Can I use this for other 5-letter word games?

Yes — any word game built around guessing a hidden 5-letter word with green/yellow/gray (or right-letter/wrong-spot/not-in-word) feedback works the same way, including Wordle clones and spin-offs.

How are the results ordered?

By how common and varied their letters are, using approximate English letter frequency. Words built from common, distinct letters are ranked first because they tend to rule out (or confirm) more possibilities with your next guess — a standard Wordle strategy.
